Several fast-moving wildfires ripped through the Texas Panhandle in late February and early March prompting the governor to issue a disaster declaration in 60 counties. A cluster of fires burned out of control fueled by strong winds, dry conditions, and unseasonably warm temperatures. Below is a list of the fires and just some of the counties affected:
- Smokehouse Creek Fire
- Hutchinson County
- Roberts County
- Hemphill County
- Lipscomb County
- Grapevine Creek Fire
- Gray County
- Windy Deuce Fire
- Hutchinson County
- Moore County
- Potter County
The Smokehouse Creek Fire has been named the largest wildfire in state history with more than 1,075,000 acres set ablaze. The fire has spread so rapidly and uncontained that parts of the Oklahoma panhandle have also been affected by the blaze. Reports indicate that a number of homes have already been lost in the fire and countless residents have been forced to evacuate.
What You Need to Know
Investigations are already under way to determine exactly what caused these fires and why. The parties determined responsible for the destruction and injuries caused by these wildfires can be held accountable. Early reports suggest that the fire may have been sparked by powerlines.
Many people do not know that insurance and government assistance may not cover all the losses incurred by a devasting wildfire. You may be able to file a lawsuit to seek recovery for structural damage to your home, emotional distress, lost wages, evacuation expenses and other types of damages not covered by insurance.
