In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times regarding the cause of the Eaton fire, Edison International Chief Executive Pedro Pizarro admitted the company’s “leading hypothesis” is that an idle, unconnected transmission line reenergized and sparked the devastating Eaton Fire.
“We have to look at everything,” Pizarro said. “Given that there was video of the flashing and the fire starting apparently around the idle transmission tower and given that that line it was holding was not connected to anything, then induction becomes a leading hypothesis.”
The Eaton Fire burned more than 14,000 acres, damaged or destroyed more than 10,000 structures, including churches, temples, mosques, senior centers, parks, and historical landmarks, displaced tens of thousands of Los Angeles County residents, and tragically resulted in the fatalities of at least 18 individuals.
What Does This Mean for You?
This is not the first time Edison has admitted their involvement in the Eaton fire. Back in February, Southern California Edison disclosed to the California Public Utilities Commission that a “fault was detected” on its Eagle Rock-Gould transmission circuit coinciding with the fire’s ignition time and location. Video and photographic evidence show flames erupting near the base of Edison transmission towers in Eaton Canyon moments after electrical anomalies were recorded.
